Tyson Rios is one of the two main protagonists of the Army of Two series; he originally worked for SSC with his long time partner Elliot Salem until the two decided to leave and form their own private military firm called TWO (Tactical Worldwide Operations).
However Rios' life of combat eventually came to a tragic end when his left leg was badly damaged due to a car explosion and the presumed death of Salem. Unable to continue to work in the field; Rios commands TWO operatives as an executive.
Some men are born with instincts and some men are born with muscle and faith. A few are born with all. Tyson Rios is one of those few.
Built like a Mack truck, standing 6 feet 4 inches tall and raised on the mean streets of Brooklyn, Rios is a natural warrior - born to be a soldier. His tough resolve, readiness to fight, and love of heavy weaponry made him a perfect match for the US Army. Proving his mettle on the battlefield as a US Army Ranger in Somalia, Rios and his partner Elliot Salem attracted the attention of their commanding officer, Richard Dalton - and eventually, a small private military contracting firm called Security and Strategy Corporation.
In combat Rios can't be fucked. All instinct, he becomes one with the battlefield. He is careful in his movements, able to assess, adapt and think under pressure. Rios acts as a leader and a point of moral grounding for his less tame partner. Rios never forgets his mistakes and always learns from them, like the reminder he carries on his face. The scar - from a accident in a past job- reminds him of a cardinal rule of engagement which he once broke and never again: never let your guard down.
Partnership with Salem[]
Salem: '"Oh no, an elevator? I'm not gonna die in a box! You should always avoid elevators during a fire."
Rios: "And you avoid bullshit in a warzone! Now get in the damn elevator!"
Rios and Salem act like brothers. They each have their own opinions on things. Salem wants to do what gets him paid whereas Rios is tactical and a strong headed man who wants to do what he thinks he best. The two have their differences yet they are still best of friends in the thick of things. Rios tends to be the more level headed of the pair, and it appears without Rios to keep him cool and on track, Salem may have a tendency to be more trigger happy than he is. Rios tends be slightly protective of Salem at points in game, telling him to get into cover, or to watch himself and this is most likely due to the fact that Salem is the more trigger happy of the two and may find himself in precarious situations.
Despite their differences in personalities, the pair of them compliment each other. Rios is the calming influence that Salem needs in battle and on missions, offering a different point of view on situations that Salem might otherwise over look. Rios tends not to take any crap from Salem, though the two banter easily, often joking even in the middle of a fight.
Army of Two[]
Military Career
Sometime before 1993; Rios joined the US Army and sometime later joined the 75th Ranger Regiment where he met and befriended Elliot Salem. In Somalia, the two are tasked to work with Phillip Clyde, a private military contractor with the Security and Strategy Corporation (SSC), tasked with carrying out the assassination of powerful local warlord Abdullahi Mo'Alim. Clyde's overly condescending attitude and behaviour disgust Salem and Rios. Clyde makes Salem and Rios pull off the assassination themselves and clear out the extraction point without his assistance. After this mission, Philip Clyde invites Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dalton (CO for Salem and Rios's Ranger squad) to join the company for a desk job. He agrees, asking to bring Salem and Rios with him as contractors, and in the following year, the three enter the private sector.[8] Salem and Rios begin work as Private Contractors.
Mercenaries for SSC
Salem and Rios are now working for Security and Strategy Corporation. After the 9/11 attacks they are sent to Afghanistan to kill an Al-Qaeda terrorist named Mohammed Al-Habiib who seized a missile facility with Soviet M-11 missiles. They also need to destroy the M-11 missiles, destroy a stockpile, and find and rescue Brian Hicks, another SSC contractor who failed the same mission. They find and destroy the missiles, then find themselves in an area filled with noxious gas. Salem comments on how poorly they are equipped for missions and Rios sees conspiracy in this. They find Brian beaten and poisoned in his cell and carry him to a safe area. They get back into the elevator and fight Mohammed over a missile station. After the fight Rios asks s3kShUn8 (Section 8) his hacker contact, to unlock a door to the chemical weapon stockpile. After destroying the chemicals; they finish the mission. Two years later, Salem and Rios are sent to Iraq. Their objective there is to rescue former squad mate Lt. Col Eisenhower, whose U.S. Army base was under siege by the terrorist leader Ali Youssef. They secure Eisenhower, but before the chopper arrives they are ambushed. Eisenhower bids them farewell before the chopper takes off, but it suddenly explodes in mid-air. Ali Youssef makes a radio transmission claiming responsibility for blowing up the chopper. Rios suspects a conspiracy behind Eisenhower's death, thinking he was singled out – Salem dismisses this, saying he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just before entering Ali Youssef's oil facility, Rios asks s3kShUn8 to investigate the ambushes and try to find their source. Salem and Rios eventually reach Ali Youssef, and kill him at his helipad.
Conspiracy Theroies
The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Constellation, has been seized by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist organization. Returning from an unspecified mission after Iraq, Salem and Rios are redirected by SSC and tasked with liberating the aircraft carrier from terrorist control. They parachute onto the deck and meet up with Philip Clyde. They clear the deck of hostiles and disable the remaining jets to prevent escape. Salem notes that the crew left behind one life boat, which could be useful. Salem and Rios soon stumble upon Clyde and a terrorist collaborating by a computer. Clyde flees, but Rios retrieves his USB flash drive. He sends the information on the drive to s3kShUn8 for analysis, and refuses to tell Alice what's happening until he hears back from him. S3kShUn8 tells Rios that Clyde was responsible for leaking U.S. Troop positions to the terrorists. Salem and Rios then stumble upon the Captain. He tells them that there are stolen nuclear warheads on board, the engine room is booby trapped, and they are on a collision course for the city of Manila on the Philippine island of Luzon. The captain detonates the explosives, sacrificing himself to make sure that the ship sinks before colliding with the city. Salem and Rios escape using the lifeboat they had discovered earlier.
After the Aircraft Carrier mission, Salem and Rios agree to quit from the company. On a special mission for their arms dealer Cha Min-Soo in South Korea, they inadvertently make contact with Alice, and decide to pull off one last mission, because Salem needs the money. They are told to execute a head terrorist within Abu Sayyaf by detonating a bridge as his car crosses. They complete their objective, but find themselves under attack by the Chinese Military and wanted for murder. It is revealed that the U.S. Senator for Alaska, Richard Whitehorse, campaigning hard against a bill to privatize the military, was the one crossing the bridge. They assume Stockwell set them up, and agree to go public with the evidence they pulled off Clyde.
Saving Alice
Alice is kidnapped, however, so they head to Miami to save her and confront Stockwell. Cha Min-Soo lends them a large cargo plane and a pilot to take them there. Miami, Florida is a hurricane zone. U.S. Air Force air defenses pick up the radar trace of Cha Min-Soo's aircraft and send up two F-15's to investigate. The two operatives notice the F-15's and then find that Clyde has murdered their pilot. They engage him in battle, but are interrupted when the U.S. Air Force shoots down the plane (due to the unresponsive dead pilot and sight of gunfire exiting the rear of the plane). Salem and Rios survive, and assume Clyde to be dead. They enter the Miami airport, where they are forced to engage SSC Operatives. S3kShUn8 informs them of Alice's location, and they head on to rescue her. In the meantime, Cha Min-Soo radios them, furious that his plane was destroyed. They tell him it was Clyde's fault, and Cha Min-Soo decides he will pay them to kill him. Rios tries to tell Cha Min-Soo that Clyde already died, but Salem stops him, thinking it will be easy money. Alice reveals to them that it was in fact Dalton who was the mastermind behind the plot, and he plans to kill Stockwell. If he succeeds, the bill to privatize the military will pass, and he will be even more powerful. Alice says they need to save Stockwell, as he is the only one who can clear their names.
Battle at SSC/Endgame
They make it to SSC HQ, where Cha Min-Soo tells them he hacked their helmet cameras, so he can see Clyde die with his own eyes. Salem and Rios are un-easy, as Cha will obviously discover their lie. They eventually get to the information department of the SSC Headquarters, and acquire all the evidence necessary to clear their names. Ironically (and lucky for them), Clyde is revealed to have survived the crash. Salem roundhouse kicks Clyde through a window, presumably killing him. They then head to the roof where Dalton is attempting to escape in a helicopter. Rios uses a Stinger missile to destroy the helicopter and kill Dalton. Days later: Stockwell is revealed (on the news) to have turned himself in and served 3 months in jail. Salem and Rios call Alice and tell her that they have started their own PMC, named Trans World Operations (T.W.O.), and invite her to join them.
Army of Two: The 40th Day[]
Mission in Shanghai
Years later after the fall of SSC; Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem as self-employed private contractors, who, along with Alice Murray run Tactical Worldwide Operations (TWO). Their second mission as the newly formed company takes them to Shanghai where they are tasked with meeting a contact named JB. Upon meeting him it is revealed that he was once an SSC Operative who also worked for Dalton. JB leads them to a back alley where their gear and weapons have been stashed in a dumpster. They then proceed with the second part of their mission in the form of planting locator beacons throughout strategic locations in Shanghai. After planting the last of the beacons and an encounter with overzealous security guards, they regroup on a rooftop of a building. Alice radios in, telling them they will get extra cash for terminating JB, a Morality Moment comes for the first time, and the players can decide to either kill him or spare him:
If the player(s)decide to kill JB; Rios shoots him in the back of the head with his pistol, and JB starts to grapple with Rios. Once Salem can get a clear shot, he shoots multiple shots into JB, and Rios kicks him off a building. After that Salem complains that killing JB was bullshit, and that he sometimes hates his job.
If the player(s)decide to spare JB; Salem shoots the floor and tells Alice that JB is dead. Rios then tells JB that he should remain dead but JB states that they see each other again soon as this kind of business to too small. JB then goes to get his money stash and flies to Seychelles‚ while he is relaxing on the beach; a unknown man in scuba gear assassinates him with a supressed pistol.
Attack on Shanghai
Following the sequence in which JB's fate is decided, a cut scene triggers showing the city of Shanghai under attack as buildings are bombarded and chaos reigns down below. Rios and Salem barely escape the rooftop and ascend the building, encountering groups of mercenaries that have specifically targeted them. They manage to contact Alice who informs them that she is alive, but is trapped in the South African Consulate. They set course for the consulate, dispatching waves of mercenaries through toppled and burning buildings as well as encountering civilian hostages, which the players can choose to leave to die or rescue. En route to Alice's location; Rios and Salem find a locker filled with weaponry and decide to help themselves only for a consulate security guard with a revovler to order Rios and Salem to put the weapons back.
Should the player(s) decide to take the weapons; Rios and Salem decide to take the weapons. Tyson tells Elliot to disarm the armed security guard. When Salem slaps the pistol away from the guard, the gun discharges. The bullet ricochets off the wall and kills the security guard. Rios exclaims, "How hard is it to not kill someone?!" Salem mutters, "Harder than I thought", before leaving. A cinematic plays, showing a little girl (possibly the security guard's daughter) crying over a picture of the dead guard. Rewards: HM Shotgun and the M416.
Should the player(s) decide to forget the weapons; Rios tells the guard that the putting the weapons away. The security guard, shocked, states he is just doing his job. After Rios and Salem leave; the guard is revealed to be working for the enemy and gives them the weapons exchange for a large sum of cash. The guard then looks down at badge in shame and throws away as he leaves with his money.
Rios and Salem discover Alice being held hostage in an office. After freeing her, the three fight their way to the main hall of the consulate where a cutscene triggers a helicopter crashing through the building and subsequently creating a hole on the floor for them to escape.
Trip to the Zoo
Alice then uses a crane to lower Rios and Salem to the ground floor while the two battle incoming mercenaries swarming them in the construction site.
Salem and Rios then use the underground tunnels and a highway, rescuing hostages and shooting through more of the hostile mercenaries. They make their way to the entrance of the Shanghai Zoo where they encounter a zoo employee who guides them via television monitors and speakers. The zoo employee is strange and errectic but Rios and Salem are forced to trust them if they want to get out alive thus they follow the man's orders. Rios and Salem make their way through the zoo amongst various animal carcass while battling more 40th Day operatives. Rios and Salem then forced to destroy a crashed helicopter in order to destroy a locator beacon so it stop more mercenaries from coming. After destroying the helicopter; Rios and Salem rescue another zoo employee who gives further acess into the zoo.
After clearing out more animal enclosures, Rios and Salem find a caged rare Albino White Tiger; the zoo employee states that while the tiger is the last of it's kind, the beast is dangerous and will probably kill someone should the tiger escape thus the two must choose to either kill or spare the Tiger:
Should the player(s) kill the tiger; the zoo employee states that the white tiger was the last of its kind. After Rios and Salem leave; a woman with a camera (possibly a zoo another zoo employee) is saddened by the tiger's death. The woman is then seen on a laptop where there is information on the white tiger. The words existent becomes extinct. Rewards: FR Elite sniper stock and V17 bayonet.
Should the player(s) spare the tiger: Salem states that the zoo employee must come down here and kill the tiger himself. A gate then opens and Rios and Salem leave. A cutscene follows where the tiger leaves it's cage and escapes the zoo. The tiger then roams the streets and jumps into a nearby car to sleep. Meanwhile a man is seen robbing a store and makes off with the money. The man gets into his car only to discover that the tiger is in the backseat behind him. The tiger then kills the criminal.
Rios and Salem then finish off the remaining mercenaries in the zoo and make their way to a wall to get out. The zoo employee thanks the two for helping to save the zoo which Salem replies "Yeah you're welcome you freakin nutcase. WORST. ZOO. EVER".
Damn Chinese
Salem and Rios leave the zoo and head through a chaos filled neighbourhood saving civilians and dispatching more enemy mercenaries. Alice, who has found safe haven, and informs them to locate a communications tower to hopefully signal for help. Rios and Salem march forward, traversing rooftops as they eliminate enemy waves. They finally reach the communication tower only to discover an empty room. They decide to continue forward and jump to an adjacent balcony. The balcony suddenly gives way and Salem plummets down to the ground and is knocked unconscious. Salem then awakens 24 hours later in a hospital.
Dr. Wu, the hospital's head doctor and person in charge, states he doesn't like mercenaries but states that the patients must be removed from the hospital as soon as possible as the crueler mercenaries are on their way.

In Army of Two: The 40th day PSP port, if you beat the game, you will unlock Jonah as a playable character, but it will be just a costume, since it doesnt changes the dialogs or the game itself.
